Recently a scooter trial period started in Portland. These city scooters are used in other major cities and finally made their way to Portland. After going to a Patagonia sample sale and gorging ourselves on a delicious brunch at Pine State Biscuits, we (Stacie, Trevor, Lucas, and myself) found some scooters and took a spin around downtown.
There are 3 different scooter companies: Bird, Lime, and Skip. We used Lime. Unlike the Nike bikes in town that are attached to stationary kiosks, the scooters are scattered individually in random places around the city.
When you open the app it shows you the location of scooters near you. Since we started our scooter adventure outside of downtown (by the brunch place), we had to walk a little bit to find the 4 nearest scooters. Once we all had a scooter we rode across a bridge, around the waterfront, and through downtown on the bike lanes.
The scooters are here for people to have a convenient way to get around downtown but we used them just for a joy ride. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!! You scan the scooter with the app when you start your ride, then scan the scooter again when you’re done and just leave the scooter on the sidewalk or wherever you are when you scan it. You also only pay for the time you’re on the scooter… or maybe the distance you ride it… I can’t remember.
I hope the scooter trial goes well so they can stay in the city forever!
