Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum with the folks was such a fun trip! The museum is almost 2 hours away from Portland (if I remember correctly) but the drive is pretty and the destination is amazing! Lucas turned into a 5 year old boy as soon as we walked through the door. Even since we moved here he has wanted to go see the Spruce Goose and we finally made it!
Almost all of the workers at this museum are volunteers who work there because they LOVE planes. While we were admiring this plane (above) an old man came up to us and without being prompted told us the entire history of the plane and how it has been used. We also learned that this and many other planes in the museum are in working condition and are for sale. If you have a couple million dollars laying around you can use it here. I love people like this old man who live to share their passion with others.
My mom calls my dad a “motor head” because he loves anything with an engine and usually knows exactly how it works. Here he is passing along the information 🙂
This plane is SO BIG. You have to see it for yourself.
There is a tv outside of the Spruce Goose with a movie playing about the creation of the plane and Howard Hughes, the man who was tasked with the project. So naturally we had to get our photo taken with Howard. We learned so many cool facts about this plane! We already knew it was made entirely out of wood but we didn’t know that they kept tons of beach balls on the inside to help it float. Also, Hughes was a clean freak and made all project workers wear cotton booties so the plane wouldn’t get dirty.
